Routers and network devices

Choosing a network device starts with the function required and existing network. Clarify whether you are adding wired connections or a wireless access point, then check the ports, power supply and controls of the exact model.

Determine the role before the parameters

The group's product titles include network switches and access points with PoE designations. Record the task the new device must perform and what it will connect to. Router and Access Point are different roles, even when one device offers more than one mode. Check the specific functions and software version of the selected model instead of inferring capabilities from the general category name.

Wired or wireless network connection

Access Point mode adds Wi-Fi to a wired network, while Range Extender mode relays an existing wireless network. Not every model supports all modes. Establish which connection is available at the installation location and which management is required. If expanding an existing system, seek explicit confirmation of compatibility. One brand or the same wireless network name is insufficient grounds to assume interchangeability between different devices and families.

Check PoE at both ends

PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ denote different power-over-Ethernet classes. A RJ45 port does not establish PoE support. Match the end device requirements to the powering switch or other intended equipment's data. For several powered devices, check total budget and individual port limit. Total budget must exceed combined requirements; checking port count alone does not resolve this task.

If guest access is required, check whether the selected model supports the isolation needed and how it affects access to local devices. Do not assume identical behaviour across different modes.

Mounting and connection

Prepare the number of cable connections required, device data and intended positioning space. Check power accessories and package contents for the exact reference. For the cable section, explore structured cabling. For equipment placement, compare communication cabinets and accessories or multimedia enclosures according to the design.
