Networks and communications

Plan the network as a connected system of cable links, active devices, enclosures and power supplies. Start with required functions and equipment locations, then select individual components by exact reference.

The cabling and devices

For routes, ready-made cords, panels and end points, start with structured cabling. Separate the areas and check requirements at both ends of every connection. For active equipment, continue to routers and network devices. Specify the device's task, interfaces required and connection to the existing system. Similar general names or a shared brand do not replace checking specific components and their functions.

Where the equipment will be placed

For cabinet installation, explore communication cabinets and accessories. If the project specifies another enclosure type in the building, compare multimedia enclosures. Prepare a list of devices, panels and cable entries before choosing external dimensions. Check usable space and mounting parts required for the exact series. The enclosure, shelf and other accessories have separate references and must be coordinated for the specific mounting assembly.

Power supply requires a separate selection

For cabinet equipment, check communication cabinet power strips according to the incoming supply, required outputs and mounting space. If devices will be powered via Ethernet, establish their PoE requirements. PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ designate different classes; the presence of a RJ45 port alone does not prove such support. Check the specific combination of power-sourcing and end equipment without assuming a function from the product group name.

With several powered devices, the switch's total PoE budget must exceed their combined requirements. The individual port limit is also checked. This cannot be resolved merely by counting free sockets. Record the electrical requirements beside each device model to coordinate the entire power supply with the cable and mounting parts of the design.

List by mounting position

Mark the connections and enclosures according to the diagram, then add the exact devices and accessories. Distinguish metres of cable, finished products and kits when calculating quantities. The systems shown from LEGRAND and EPN can also be browsed by manufacturer once the requirements are defined. Finally, check both ends of the connections, installation location, power supply and actual pack contents for each item.
